The PDF (Portable Document Format) file format allow to storage the documents of any type thanks a language of Description of page similary at Postscript
used in printing systems typography. Thanks to the richness and flexibility of this language, a PDF document can also contain references to external fonts, scripts to be executed at the time of his rendering, links to other files, multimedia content or encrypted content.
This of course may not provide the ability to view a document in exactly the same way on different systems by different users or at different times.
To solve the problem of archiving of the documents in the long term
this format is derived from a sub-format, called PDF/A, where A is precisely for Archiving,
to refer to the document storage for long periods of time.
The PDF/A, although retains many of the advantages of the PDF is designed to be a self-consistent format that can be viewed exactly the same way in all circumstances. This means, in short, that all fonts used must be included in your file, that there can be no multimedia content that can not contain scripts or executable code, that the color space used must be explicitly specified, the contents should not be encrypted, which must contain certain obligatory metadata.
In fact, then a PDF file that follows the rules described above conforms with the standard PDF/A.
The PDF/A format is founded from Industrial Standard Organization
becoming the standard ISO 19005 and currently provides two levels of compliance:
The PDF/A-1b has the objective to guarantee that the document can be visually displayed in a reliable manner.
The PDF/A-1a addition to the requirements of PDF/A-1b also includes the need for the presence of information about the structure of the document
(called "tag", so we talk about document " tagged ") so that its content can be searched and displayed more smoothly.
